Los Ángeles Me Salvaron
Story Behind the Song
"Los Ángeles Me Salvaron" (The Angels Saved Me) is one of the most personal songs I have ever written. It is both a song and a reflection on my experience as an eighteen-year-old immigrant in Atlanta, and a message of hope for anyone who feels lost or alone.
This is a song almost twenty-seven years in the making. For most of that time I kept it to myself, and only now have I found the courage to say it out loud.
At eighteen I arrived in Atlanta with only a backpack, no money and a heavy debt on my shoulders. I carried an immense desire to get ahead, but I soon discovered that loneliness weighs even more when you are surrounded by family and still meet rejection and silence in your most vulnerable moments.
But in the middle of that darkness, people appeared who changed my life. Strangers became the angels who saved me.
A taxi driver who refused to charge me for a whole week of rides. Someone who fed me when I had nothing. Someone who drove me to work. Someone who simply listened to my story and stayed close when I felt I could not go on.
They taught me that not all angels have wings. They are ordinary people, coworkers, strangers and friends, who show compassion through small acts that change a life forever.
This song is my way of thanking them, and of reminding anyone who feels alone today that there is still good in the world.
If you are eighteen, far from home, or you feel that life has already beaten you, I want to tell you something I learned myself:
Do not give up.
Keep walking, open your heart and accept the help that others offer you.
Angels exist.
