Santa Canceló el Polo Norte
Story Behind the Song
"Santa Canceló el Polo Norte" (Santa Cancelled the North Pole) runs with a delightfully absurd premise: what if Santa finally gave up on the freezing North Pole and moved the whole operation down to Puerto Vallarta?
In the song, that is exactly what happens. Worn out by the icy weather, Santa lands in Vallarta, takes one look at the malecón, and decides to stay for good. The reindeer take to the beach right away, and Rudolph even asks for a cold coconut. Santa trades the heavy suit for something lighter and settles into the local life: mariachi music, the warmth of the people, plates of pescado zarandeado, and a cold tejuino to wash it down.
By the end, he sends the kids a message of his own. He is not going back to the North Pole, and if they want their presents, they will have to come down to Puerto Vallarta and celebrate Christmas by the sea.
It is one of the most tongue-in-cheek songs on Navidad En Vallarta, a love letter to my city disguised as a comedy. Underneath the joke is real local pride: the idea that the warmth here, the weather and the people, is exactly the kind of place even Santa would rather be.
